Orvis Recon 9' 6 Saltwater Fly Rod Excellent Condition

Orvis Recon 9' 6 Saltwater Fly Rod - Excellent Condition. This is a first-generation Recon and that makes it special. The gen-one rods are significantly lighter than the new gen-two rods. As the story goes, the first-generation rods were a bit too good.

They were light, fast, and accurate. Fly rod reviews showed the gen-one Recons were mid-priced champions and represented a much better bang-for-the-buck. Not to worry, Orvis fixed that with the gen-two rods. By being 9 6 the extra height did two things: first, it makes the rod easier to cast from a boat as the tip can get closer to the water on a retrieve, and second, that additional 6 inches gives the rod more power than a traditional 6wt. I fished this rod using a 7wt line, which provided more capability when casting in windy conditions.

The slightly heavier line makes it easier to turn over large streamers and wind-resistant poppers. Typically, when fishing for schoolies youre having to do a lot of blind casting (essentially, hunting for fish) and the refinement of the gen-one blank means this rod has a very low swing-weight. Read any of the reviews on the gen-two rods and every one comments about the higher swing-weight. Higher swing-weight translates into casting shoulder fatigue. Unfortunately, schoolie stripers have a fairly short window in CT (around the end of May to the middle of June), which overlaps with my late spring trout fishing. This year the rod didnt see the water and I dont see that situation changing next year either.

Orvis raised the price of the gen-two rods 25% over the gen-one rods, and I dont think theyre done as Ive seen them constantly raise the price on the H3s. Higher prices on gen-two rods means that the gen-one rods in the near future could exceed their original price. The gen-one rods were the last of the truly affordable, top casting rods from Orvis. This rod is in excellent shape and has been treated gently. This rod would be great for Striped Bass, Harbor Blues, Largemouth Bass, Carp, and of course large trout.

As memory serves, the largest schoolie I caught was around 22 and it took me about an hour to stop smiling. Thanks for looking and feel free to ask any questions. BTW, as a bonus, Ill toss in a few streamers to get you going. The item "Orvis Recon 9' 6 Saltwater Fly Rod Excellent Condition" is in sale since Sunday, September 5, 2021.
